First of all, why order a commission?

Ordering a pencil portrait commission of a horse offers a timeless and personal way to celebrate your beloved animal. Whether for yourself or as a gift each portrait captures the unique character, strength, and spirit of the horse in fine detail and a unique style that pays homage to the sheer beauty of these magnificent animals.

Hand-drawn in graphite, the artwork becomes a cherished keepsake, perfect for honouring a loyal companion, commemorating a special bond, or adding an elegant, meaningful touch to any space.

How much does a commission cost?
The price of a commission can depend on a few factors including size and number of subjects, please visit my commission pricelist page for more details.

What makes for a perfect reference photo?

The base for any commission is the reference photo and in order to create the perfect portrait I need the best photo possible to work from.

The perfect photo of a horse captures not just its appearance, but its spirit and individuality. Good lighting (ideally soft, natural light) brings out the texture of the coat and the depth of the eyes. The horse should be clean, alert, and relaxed, with ears forward and a calm expression. Composition matters too, a clear, uncluttered background and a flattering angle, often taken at eye level or slightly from the front, help highlight the horse’s conformation and character.

If you're wanting an action portrait then the photo should be crisp, clear and it should capture the power, grace, and energy of movement in a single, striking moment. Timing is everything, the photo should be taken at the peak of motion, such as when all four hooves are off the ground during a gallop or jump, to freeze the sense of flight. Good lighting, especially natural light from the side, helps define muscles and motion, while a fast shutter speed ensures crisp detail without blur.

Struggling to get that perfect photo?

If you don’t have the perfect reference photo of your horse, I’m happy to help. I can travel within a reasonable distance of Central Scotland to take my own photographs, ensuring I capture the angles, expressions, and details needed to create the best possible artwork. This allows me to get to know your horse in person and produce a portrait that’s both accurate and full of character.
